Write at the Beach Escapes.
November is the time of year in which many would-be novelists tackle National Novel Writing Month, or “NaNoWriMo”, an annual challenge to produce a 50,000-word novel in one month!
Now, as every writer knows, having an idea for a book is one thing; completing it is something else entirely – especially in such a short space of time.
So how to get that book finished? Of course, you need your plot, your characters and a good idea of where to begin – and where your story might end up – but you also need the perfect place in which to write…enter The Beach Escapes!
Taking a break from the everyday is known to help with the writing process.
The Beach Escapes provides a well-appointed, beautifully designed home-from-home and the ideal setting in which to step away from the mundane and focus solely on the task at hand – getting your novel finished.
Creativity is sometimes hard to harness, but the sea has been a dramatic backdrop for many a novel – French Lieutenant’s Woman anyone? We’ve had writers stay at the Beach Escapes who have taken inspiration from the property’s sea-front location, with its views across the channel to France, the soaring gulls, crashing waves and stunning skies, especially in the winter months. The wider county of Kent offers some stunning scenery, with lots of places to enjoy the fresh air of the countryside or coast. A ‘plot walk’ is a well-known writers’ tactic – and there are many options as soon as you open the front door and step onto Hythe’s promenade.
Folkestone – just a short drive or bus ride away – is fast becoming a cultural (and foodie) mecca, and its annual book festival returns on 18 November 2022. Running until 27 November, the Folkestone Book Festival promises ‘a welcoming space for ideas, conversation, debate, and a general celebration of the written word.’ What better excuse to book a trip to the Beach Escapes and take the opportunity to learn from some of the country’s most exciting writing talent?
As important as location are a writer’s immediate surroundings and home comforts.
Our one-bedroom apartments have plenty of space and quiet corners in which to set up a laptop, and the high-speed Wi-Fi will make light work of research. Wonderfully sumptuous sofas are perfect for a day of note-making and planning.
Taking regular breaks from penning your prose is vital, ensuring eyes are fresh for the all-important review or proofread. Hythe and Sandgate high streets have an abundance of welcoming coffee shops and cafés, ideal for sitting and gaining a fresh perspective whilst enjoying a hot drink and a slice of cake. Some of the finest writers are famed for crafting their work in cafés – Hemingway, F. Scott Fitzgerald and J.K. Rowling, to name but a few!
Less than an hour from London by train to Folkestone or Ashford – and just minutes from the M20 motorway, The Beach Escapes is as accessible as it is tranquil – the perfect writer’s retreat. Perhaps one day we will all enjoy reading a book set in a white and blue house on the Kent coast…!
