St. Leonard’s Church in Hythe

Nestled in the heart of Hythe, St. Leonard’s Church stands as a beacon of history, spirituality, and community. A mere stone’s throw away from our Kent beachfront holiday accommodation, this church is not just a place of worship but a treasure trove of stories waiting to be discovered.

Historical Significance

St. Leonard’s Church is renowned for its rich history, evident in its architecture and the stories etched on its walls. One of the most intriguing aspects of the church is the ancient graffiti found on its stonework. These markings, which include ritual protection marks, apotropaic marks (often referred to as “witches’ marks”), depictions of animals, humans, ships, and boats, offer a unique window into the past. Local historian Anne Petrie, in collaboration with the Hythe Local History Society, has meticulously catalogued these graffiti, making it a point of interest for history enthusiasts.

The Melody of Bells

The church is also home to a magnificent peal of ten bells, which ring out melodiously, marking the beginning of the Sunday services. These bells have a history of their own, with records indicating their presence as far back as the 1400s. Over the years, the bells have undergone recasting and refurbishments, with the most recent addition being two lighter bells in 1992. The bell-ringing tradition is kept alive by a dedicated and sociable band of ringers, who not only ring the bells for Sunday services but also for weddings and special occasions.

The Harmonious Choirs of St. Leonard’s

Music plays an integral role in the spiritual tapestry of St. Leonard’s Church, with the harmonious melodies of the choir resonating through its historic walls. The church boasts a fine organ, crafted by the renowned firm of Harrison and Harrison, accompanied by a three-stop chamber organ and a Steinway Model B grand piano, which often graces various concerts. Additionally, a smaller Bechstein grand and a mobile Yamaha electric piano aid in choir rehearsals, ensuring the best musical experience.

Choral music is a staple in the worship services at St. Leonard’s. Every Sunday, (except holiday times,) the church comes alive with the voices of one or more of its choirs during the Choral Eucharist and Choral (or Sung) Evensong. Despite a brief hiatus in live choral music due to the events of 2020, the choirs have made a triumphant return, gracing services on most Sundays. For those inspired by the beauty of choral music, St. Leonard’s offers opportunities for both adults and children to join and be part of this melodious journey. Whether you’re a seasoned singer or someone looking to explore the world of choral music, St. Leonard’s Church provides a welcoming environment to nurture your passion and be part of a harmonious community.

A Glimpse into the Crypt

St. Leonard’s is often referred to as the “church with the bones” due to its famous ossuary or crypt. This unique feature adds to the church’s allure, drawing visitors keen on exploring the mysteries that lie beneath.
