Greatstone Beach: A Coastal Haven in Kent
Greatstone Beach, a two-mile stretch of sandy shoreline dotted with large rocks, has been a favourite destination for holidaymakers for generations. Located in Kent, this beach is renowned for its long stretch of flat, soft sand and safe swimming waters, making it a popular choice for families and water sports enthusiasts.
A Beach for Every Season and Reason
- Watersports Paradise: Greatstone Beach is particularly known for its excellent conditions for windsports, including land yachting, windsurfing, kitesurfing, and kiteboarding. The beach’s expansive area, especially at low tide when the water recedes almost half a mile, provides ample space for these activities.
- Natural Beauty and Biodiversity: The Greatstone Dunes, running along nearly the entire length of the beach, are not only a natural barrier between the seafront and the land but also a Site of Specific Scientific Interest. These dunes are home to a wide variety of rare plant species and support a strong population of small animals and insects, making it a fascinating spot for nature lovers.
- Exploring Beyond the Sands: Stretching from Dungeness point to Romney, Greatstone Beach offers more than just a seaside experience. The Dungeness National Nature Reserve nearby allows visitors to explore and learn about the area’s diverse wildlife, while a walk to Romney Marsh reveals a unique and interesting landscape. Train enthusiasts will also enjoy the sight of the Romney to Dymchurch steam railway running along the beach.
Greatstone Beach Facilities and Accessibility
Greatstone Beach is equipped with various facilities to enhance the visitor experience. These include a café, restaurant, toilets, a shop, and a pub nearby. There’s also a picnic area and a slipway, catering to the needs of both casual visitors and watersports enthusiasts. Parking is available by the beach, making it easily accessible for day-trippers.
Is Greatstone Beach Dog-Friendly?
Dogs are welcome on certain sections of Greatstone Beach, making it a perfect destination for pet owners. However, there are restrictions on two sections of the beach from 1 May to 30 September each year, ensuring a balance between pet-friendly areas and spaces reserved for visitors without pets.
A note for dog owners: The beach is divided into three sections. Two of the sections are open to dogs only in the winter but one section – next to the Varne Yacht Club – is open to dogs all year round.
